A Century of Job Applications

A close up, black and white image of two stacks of folders, files, and paper, with a small gap between them. They reach up past the top of the photo.

As of the 3rd I’ve hit 100 job applications filed this year (including following up on leads that didn’t involve a formal application).

So that’s a thing.

I’ve started expanding my parameters a bit to find more opportunities. I’ve applied a couple of developer jobs (which I’m less qualified for), and also started branching out into learning some trades (by which I mean applying for construction jobs). I’d be starting from the bottom again, but at this point I’m more than okay with that.

It’s frustrating, because I think I have the skills/aptitudes for a lot of mid-level tech work at this point, but it’s hard for me to completely prove it on paper. My last gig left me with a very particular set of skills that only cross-apply a bit to jobs outside of a datacenter. And I really can’t work in a datacenter again, it’s too rough on the mental health for me. I need windows and coworkers, apparently. Weird.

Ziprecruiter may also be serving me as a double-edged sword when it comes to applications, as it has a mode that encourages just directly throwing your resume at people. On one hand, this is nice because it means the job opening’s manager has admitted “no we really don’t care about your cover letter.” On the other hand, it means there’s no cover letter so I can’t explain how what I’ve done in the past applies here.

So that’s where I’m at on the job search. Still grinding away. Hopefully I’ll find something soon.

If, in the meantime, you need an editor, sensitivity reader, writer, tech support pal, or some conbination of those things, I’m definitely open for freelance clients. See scrivian.com, my professional freelancing site, for details.
