Week Wrap-up: April 30th 2018 – May 13th 2018

A pixelated, limited-color pallete version of a photo of Jerry the leopard gecko.

Did some experimenting with making a photo low-fi and ended up with this! Legible and an order of magnitude smaller than the original fie.

It’s been two weeks! Oh no! :O

Things have been busy, brain has been stormy, but the world keeps chuggin’ along. And while that’s been happening:

  • Passed the first technical interview as I chug along through Big Tech Company’s interview process. This was the coding interview, so I’m very pleased (and, honestly, a bit surprised) that I passed. The next interview is at the end of the month, and will involve more general technical knowledge (and maybe more coding-related stuff). Time to study up on Linux and networking. Joy?
  • School is wrapping up and I’m looking down the barrel of two final projects that are due in on Tuesday. I’ve got one that’s mostly done and one I haven’t started, so that’s cool. The one I haven’t started promises to be more tedious than difficult, but I still Have a Concern. Once these are done (and I register for fall classes), I’ll be free from grad school all summer, though, which should be really nice. (Free time!)
  • I continue to be bad at humaning.
  • I’ve done a better-than-intended job of staying off of Twitter. Which: whoops. But it’s also good? So instead I’ve been spending my social media time on Mastodon, which sometimes also makes me sad, but in different ways. Also there’s a very good “let’s collaborate and do something awesome” vibe on there which I really enjoy, and makes up for the down times.
  • I finally set up Xubuntu on an old desktop my friend gave me, and having a powerful linux box is awesome. I’ve also got document syncing set up between it and my laptop, so hopefully I can kick some more ass on my projects without being hampered somewhat by my underpowered laptop. (It freezes sometimes, which is worse for one’s morale than I remembered.)
  • Fallout 4 continues to be fun. I’m realizing how much of the map I didn’t see last time. I’ve also hit level 25 or so, which is nice because now not every fight is a terror-filled nightmare. It also makes the lack of cover mechanics for the player character much more tolerable. (I’m still jealous of the NPCs and their ability to blind-fire over the top of cover, though.)
  • I started looking into building an operating system in collaboration with someone I know through Mastodon. It’d be a hell of a challenge, but I think we could do a lot of good with it? The focus would be on empowering the user, without requiring the user to be super technical (*cough* LINUX *cough*).
  • I had the depressing realization that a lot of things I get really excited about doing are mostly-to-completely incompatible with capitalism. Boo, hiss. 🙁
  • I’m currently sick, but on the mend. I just wish I would mend faster.
  • Just before I got sick, I broke a PR for squats by managing 3 sets of 5 squats lifting 125kg. Fuck yeah.
  • I feel like I’ve been foundering in my writing, but that’s nothing super new. I still need to edit a few short stories, and buckle down and actually write some new thing start-to-finish.
  • I also started drawing a little again, and it feels good when I get a chance.
  • I figured out a new planner system which is working better for me than a Passion Planner, though I’m still bad at checking it on the weekends. One thing at a time, I guess.

And that’s about it! I hope the world is treating everyone well. What have you been up to lately? Any new projects? Hopes, dreams, setbacks, weirdly inconclusive side-quests?
